Mistfall Hunter Stutter and Frame Drops: What Actually Helps

The signature Mistfall Hunter performance complaint is not low frame rate. It’s a high average that collapses when you move the camera, on hardware that has no business struggling. Bellring has acknowledged the category and not much else, so this page separates what’s confirmed from what players found by testing.

What Bellring has said

Two official statements, both worth reading precisely.

DevNote #7 (July 24), before launch, lists the optimization work that went into the release build:

The same post also hedges, correctly: “actual improvements may vary depending on your specific hardware configuration and system environment.”

The roadmap post (August 5), after launch, is one sentence:

“We’re also actively investigating the stuttering and latency issues reported recently, and we’ll sync with you as soon as we have progress to report.”

No cause, no ETA, no promised patch. Anyone telling you a performance patch is scheduled is guessing.

What players found: ray tracing and frame gen

The most useful real-world thread is Frame drops when looking around quickly, and general performance issues on the Steam forums. The reports there are from machines nobody would call underpowered:

Two fixes come up repeatedly in the replies, and both are free to test:

  1. Ray tracing off. One reply is blunt — “Turn off Ray Tracing. They didnt optimise it well” — and another player confirms that disabling it while leaving everything else maxed resolved most of their stuttering.
  2. Frame generation off. “For some reason it causes alot of stutters,” per one player. This is a real pattern in UE5 titles: frame gen smooths a steady frame rate and makes an unsteady one worse.

Beyond that, the honest advice is method rather than a settings preset: test one change at a time and judge it on 1% lows. The failure mode here specifically hides inside a healthy average.

A note on the “optimized settings” pages you’ll find elsewhere: several claim Bellring recommends a particular preset. We checked the official news hub and found no such post. Game Rant’s settings guide is transparent that its numbers come from the author’s own testing on an RTX 4080 laptop, not from the developer — that’s the right way to read all of them.

The FOV question

There is no FOV slider. Game Rant confirmed this on July 30: “Mistfall Hunter does not currently feature a native FOV slider or field-of-view setting.”

And to save you a search: /fov120 is not a command. It’s a chat meme. As one player explained it in the Steam thread complaining about the spam:

“/fov 120 is a command to make the game Field Of View at 120 degrees horizontal. Lot of players wants a FOV slider in the option menu, so someone type /fov 120 in chats, and others people are trying too, the result is a constant spam.”

Typing it does nothing. Bellring has not committed to adding a slider. If you have an ultrawide display, running at 21:9 gives you more horizontal view — that’s a resolution effect, not an FOV setting, and it’s the only lever that exists today.

Consoles

GamingTrend’s review notes console versions run at “lower resolution, muddier textures,” and that there is no cross-progression between PS5 and PC — worth knowing before you decide the console build is your performance answer.

Sources

DevNote #7 (July 24) and its specifics — shader precompilation, device-tier optimisation and reduced micro-stutter in combat — the August 5 roadmap post’s line about actively investigating stutter and latency, and the “strongly recommended” SSD note all come from the official Mistfall Hunter Steam news page. Turning off ray tracing and Frame Generation, and the hands-on reports from a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an RX 9070 XT and from an RTX 5090 machine, come from players in the Steam thread Frame drops when looking around quickly, quoted verbatim — that is community reporting, not official guidance. The fact that /fov120 is a chat meme comes from a player’s own explanation in the thread complaining about the spam. The absence of a native FOV slider comes from Game Rant’s July 30 report. Console resolution and texture quality, and the lack of cross-progression between PS5 and PC, come from GamingTrend’s review. We also checked the official news page and found no post in which Bellring recommends particular graphics settings; Game Rant’s settings guide states outright that its numbers come from the author’s testing on an RTX 4080 laptop. The “change one thing at a time and watch your 1% lows” method is our own editorial approach and comes from nobody else.
