Halloween: The Game known issues: what Hotfix 1 and Day One Patch 1.0.1 fixed, what players still report, and what to do now
By DayOneFix Editorial · September 6, 2026
| Issue | Status | What we know / workaround | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Numerous crashes — Hotfix 1 shipped crash fixes on 5 September | Fixed | IllFonic's Early Access Hotfix 1 (posted 5 September, 20:48 UTC) is 'primarily aimed towards addressing several crashes'. Only 3 of the 100 most recent negative English reviews we read on 6 September still cite crashing, so the fix appears to have landed; the studio says a bigger patch is in the works. Restart Steam if the update has not applied. | https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3219630 |
| Offline Play blocked by the login queue — fixed in Hotfix 1 | Fixed | Official wording: 'Fixed an issue where Offline Play was affected by the login queueing system.' If you bought Deluxe for the single-player campaign and were held in a queue on 4–5 September, that is what you hit. | https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3219630 |
| Challenges not tracking progress — fixed in Hotfix 1 | Fixed | Hotfix 1 fixed several; Patch 1.0.1 adds more challenge and achievement fixes (including the Chapter 5 achievement not awarding) and IllFonic says it will keep chasing outliers. | https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3219630 |
| Michael's 'get up' prompt after being downed sometimes missing — fixed in Hotfix 1 | Fixed | Official: 'Fixed an issue where the prompt to get up after being downed as Michael would sometimes not appear.' | https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3219630 |
| Xbox Series S renders incorrectly in Performance Mode on some displays — fixed in Hotfix 1 | Fixed | Official: 'Fixed an issue causing the game to render incorrectly on Xbox Series S in Performance Mode on certain displays.' The only console-specific item in the hotfix. | https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3219630 |
| Cross-play party kicked to menu when matchmaking — fixed in Patch 1.0.1 | Fixed | Official: 'Cross-play party members now follow their leader into a matchmade lobby instead of being kicked to the main menu or dropped from the party.' This was the greyed-out mixed-platform party players hit during advance access; private matches had worked all along. | https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3219630 |
| Voice chat: proximity chat drops mid-match, no mic selection or volume sliders, poor audio quality | Open | Player reports, not in Hotfix 1: 30 of the 100 most recent negative English reviews (6 September) mention voice chat. Recurring specifics: proximity chat works in the lobby but 'seems to break half the time once you get in game'; no way to pick an external microphone (the game grabs the headset mic); no volume or mic-gain settings; distorted audio. IllFonic has not addressed voice in an official post yet. | https://store.steampowered.com/app/3219630/#app_reviews_hash |
| Stutter and frame drops on high-end PCs | Open | 24 of 100 recent negative reviews cite stutter, frame drops or 'not optimised', including reports on RTX 5090 / Ryzen 9 9950X3D class hardware. Not mentioned in Hotfix 1. Minimum spec is a GTX 1660 / RX 590 for 1080p at 30 fps, so the ceiling is low by design, but stutter on top-end parts is a separate problem the studio has not commented on. | https://store.steampowered.com/app/3219630/ |
| Gameplay bugs: falling through floors, stuck in animations or geometry, interactables not responding | Acknowledged | Patch 1.0.1 (8 September) fixed a batch: Police NPCs stuck in places, Residents unable to path to Escapes, a stuck perk-roll menu, hidden residents missing from minimaps, interaction prompts disappearing, grab executions alerting unaware victims, the variable weather not activating in public matches, Shape Dash VFX persisting. Falling through floors and stuck-in-animation reports are not named in the notes, so this row stays open for those. | https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3219630 |
| Bigger patch promised — delivered as Day One Patch 1.0.1 on 8 September | Fixed | Delivered: the Day One Patch 1.0.1 went out with the full launch on 8 September (16:30 UTC post). It bundles crash fixes, the cross-play party matchmaking fix, NPC pathing, more challenge and achievement fixes, stamina and chase balance changes, a wider Escape discovery range, Perk Deck limits and a long list of smaller fixes. IllFonic says more updates follow. | https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3219630 |
| Balance: Michael vs Civilians, locked houses, NPC behaviour — design complaints, not bugs | Acknowledged | Patch 1.0.1 made the first balance pass: longer Civilian stamina regen delay, Evil Presence drains more stamina, Stalked targets regenerate slower; low-Athleticism Civilians recover faster, high-Athleticism ones lose a little max stamina; diminishing returns on blinding Michael repeatedly; end-of-match scoring rebalanced. IllFonic says it is still monitoring the chase. | https://store.steampowered.com/app/3219630/#app_reviews_hash |
| Matchmaking queue times and bot-filled lobbies | Open | Advance-access sample only. After the full launch IllFonic reported over 500,000 players within hours (8 September post), so the pool is no longer the constraint; 1.0.1 also lengthens the pre-match countdown while a public lobby fills. We will re-read reviews after the first full week. | https://store.steampowered.com/app/3219630/#app_reviews_hash |
How this table works: every row is a problem we could source either to IllFonic’s own patch notes or to player reports we read ourselves — the light goes green only when a fix has actually shipped, and rows built on reviews say so. Deluxe Advance Access opened on 4 September at 9 AM PT; the full launch followed on 8 September at 9 AM PT with Day One Patch 1.0.1. This page is being kept through launch week.
Launch day went big: IllFonic reported over 500,000 players within hours of the 8 September release, and every account that logged in during Advance Access gets 5,000 free Perk Points. The Steam rating has moved from Mixed on 6 September (2,552 / 1,180) to Mostly Positive on 9 September (5,437 / 2,260) and back to Mixed — 6,211 positive to 2,702 negative on the morning of 10 September (70%). The theme tally below is still the 6 September read of advance-access reviews; the Day One Patch addressed several of those themes, and the table rows say which.
Day One Patch 1.0.1: what changed at launch
Posted with the “Out Now” announcement on 8 September (16:30 UTC). The headline fix is cross-play parties: “Cross-play party members now follow their leader into a matchmade lobby instead of being kicked to the main menu or dropped from the party.” The rest: NPC pathing (police no longer stuck, residents can path into Escapes), more challenge and achievement fixes, a first balance pass on stamina and the chase (Civilians regenerate slower under pressure, low-Athleticism Civilians recover faster, high-Athleticism ones lose a little max stamina, blinding Michael repeatedly has diminishing returns), Civilians discover Escapes from farther away, Perk Decks capped at two copies of a perk, various crash fixes, and a rebalanced end-of-match score. Nothing in the notes addresses voice chat or stutter — those rows stay open.
Hotfix 1: what it actually says
IllFonic posted Early Access — Hotfix 1 on 5 September at 20:48 UTC (13:48 PT). The studio’s own framing: the patch is “primarily aimed towards addressing several crashes”, plus “a small list of other issues”, and “we are currently working on a bigger patch that addresses many issues and concerns that are being reported from the playerbase”. The full list is five items — numerous crash fixes, challenges not tracking, Offline Play caught by the login queue, Michael’s get-up prompt, and Xbox Series S Performance Mode rendering — and all five are rows in the table above.
What is not in Hotfix 1 is the rest of what players are complaining about. We read the 100 most recent negative English reviews on 6 September and tallied the themes:
| Theme | Share of 100 recent negative reviews | In Hotfix 1? |
|---|---|---|
| Balance (Michael vs Civilians, locked houses, NPCs) | 43 | No — design feedback |
| Bugs and glitches (floors, animations, interactables) | 42 | Partly — “bigger patch” promised |
| Voice chat (proximity drops, no mic selection, no sliders) | 30 | No |
| Stutter and frame drops | 24 | No |
| Repetitive / thin content | 16 | No — design feedback |
| Matchmaking queues, bot lobbies | 9 | No |
| Invites, party, crossplay | 8 | No |
| Crashes | 3 | Yes |
Read the shares as a sentiment map, not as bug counts: a review can hit several rows, and people who are happy do not write these.
What to do now
- Crashing: make sure Patch 1.0.1 has applied (Steam: right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files, or simply restart Steam). If it still crashes after the update, IllFonic’s Discord is where the studio is collecting reports; there is no public bug tracker.
- Voice chat: there is no official workaround. Two things players report helping: setting your intended microphone as the Windows default before launching the game (the game does not offer a device picker), and using party voice on Discord for friends. We will replace this paragraph with the studio’s answer when there is one.
- Balance and NPC behaviour: nothing to fix on your side. If you are deciding whether to buy at launch, this is the theme to read reviews for — it dominates the negatives and a hotfix will not change it.
- Offline Play: if you were stuck in a login queue trying to play the campaign on 4–5 September, that specific bug is fixed; retry after updating.
