A crash and a total freeze are not the same Mistfall Hunter problem. If the game process exits or an Unreal Engine fatal-error dialog appears, use our Mistfall Hunter crash guide. This page is for the other, nastier failure: the picture freezes, the game becomes not responding, Windows cannot kill the process, and the only escape reported by players is restarting the PC.

That distinction matters when searching, too. A fatal error can hit on launch, while reports of a game frozen or total freeze cluster around the skills menu and the hub area. For the latter, there is unusually useful evidence: in the Steam discussion about total freezes, Gyldhunter — visibly marked [developer] on Steam — posted a five-step workaround. It is a developer recommendation, not an announcement that the bug has been fixed.

The developer’s five steps

Follow the checklist in the order posted. The fourth item, disabling Mandatory ASLR, was called the main fix. Gyldhunter also said that step has worked best for players using Intel and NVIDIA platforms.

1. Update the GPU driver

Install the latest driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics hardware, then restart Windows before retesting. This is basic advice, but it is explicitly the developer’s first step rather than an inference we are adding. If a new driver was installed just before the freezing began, the Steam post does not say to roll it back; it says to update. Try the advice as written before changing variables.

2. Disable NVIDIA Smooth Motion

If you have the NVIDIA feature enabled, turn off NVIDIA Smooth Motion and test a trip through the hub and the skills menu. This is not a general claim that frame generation causes every Mistfall Hunter freeze. It is simply the second setting Gyldhunter named in response to this report. If your issue is low frame rate or ordinary stutter rather than a completely stuck process, see Mistfall Hunter performance settings instead.

3. Disable Intel AI Boost in Device Manager

The third recommendation is to disable Intel AI Boost in Device Manager. Intel AI Boost is the NPU found in Intel Core Ultra processors; it is not the graphics driver. Open Device Manager, locate the Intel AI Boost device, and choose Disable device using the path in the checklist.

Be careful with the explanation here. The developer suggested this step, but the post does not establish why disabling the NPU could prevent the freeze, and we have not independently verified an explanation. We therefore cannot say it is the root cause, or that every Intel system needs it disabled. If your computer does not show Intel AI Boost, it is not a step you can apply; continue to the next one rather than trying to substitute a similarly named device.

4. Turn off Mandatory ASLR

This is the important change in the evidence. Our fatal-error crash page previously treated turning off Force randomization for images (Mandatory ASLR) as a community workaround. For total freezes, it now has direct developer backing: Gyldhunter called it the main solution and said it was most effective on Intel and NVIDIA platforms.

Go to Windows SecurityApp & browser controlExploit protection settings, then set Force randomization for images (Mandatory ASLR) to Off by default. Restart the PC afterward. A restart is especially sensible for a problem where the frozen game process reportedly cannot be ended normally.

This is still a workaround, not proof that Mandatory ASLR is universally incompatible with the game, and not a statement that Bellring has permanently fixed the underlying defect. Mandatory ASLR is an exploit-protection setting, so do not turn off unrelated Windows security features while following this instruction. Change only the setting the developer named.

5. Send a support ticket if it continues

If all four changes fail, the developer’s final instruction is to open a support ticket in the official Discord. AMD users were specifically asked to take that route. Include enough detail for the team to tell this apart from a crash: say whether the image stopped updating, whether it happened in the skills menu or hub, whether Windows could end the process, your CPU and GPU, driver version, and which checklist steps you tried.

For a problem during connection, loading, or a raid that looks more like a lost session than a locked-up PC, use the separate disconnect, desync and high-ping guide. It covers a different class of failure.

What the Steam thread does — and does not — confirm

The original poster described a total freeze that had not been helped by prior attempts. Other participants described the same broad symptom, with reports concentrating on the skills menu and hub. The thread says the issue appeared after a patch two days earlier, but that timing alone does not identify a cause.

One player, VoiD, said they had previously experienced freezes and crashes and had not had either since the latest patch. That is a useful individual observation, not confirmation that a patch repaired the total-freeze bug for everyone. We are not calling this fixed on that basis.

Likewise, a reply from an account labelled [developer] is stronger evidence than the community-only advice available for the fatal-error page, but it remains a list of mitigations. The developer did not declare an official resolution, give a patch number containing a fix, or explain the mechanism behind each setting. If the five steps do not change your result, the honest answer is that the public thread does not provide a verified next technical fix; file the requested support ticket.

FAQ

What is the main fix for a Mistfall Hunter total freeze? Turning off Mandatory ASLR — set Force randomization for images to Off by default in Windows Security’s Exploit protection settings, then restart the PC. Gyldhunter, a Steam account marked [developer], called it the main solution and said it has worked best on Intel and NVIDIA platforms.

Is a freeze the same as a fatal error crash? No. In a crash the game process exits or an Unreal Engine fatal-error dialog appears. In the total freeze covered here, the picture stops, the game becomes not responding, Windows cannot kill the process, and the only escape players report is restarting the PC.

Where do the freezes happen most? Reports cluster around the skills menu and the hub area, while a fatal error can hit on launch. That symptom split is how you pick the right guide.

What should AMD users do? The developer specifically asked AMD users to open a support ticket in the official Discord if the steps don’t help.

Has Bellring officially fixed the freeze bug? No. The developer post is a list of mitigations — no official resolution announced, no patch number containing a fix, and no explanation of the mechanism behind each setting. One player reporting no freezes since the latest patch is an individual observation, not confirmation.

The entire five-step mitigation — update the graphics driver, turn off NVIDIA Smooth Motion, disable Intel AI Boost in Device Manager, set Mandatory ASLR back to its default of off (which the developer calls the main fix and says has worked best on Intel and NVIDIA platforms), and open a support ticket on the official Discord if you are on AMD — comes from posts by Gyldhunter, an account visibly marked [developer] on Steam, in the Steam discussion about total freezes. That same thread is also the source for the symptoms clustering in the skills menu and the hub area, for the reports that they began about two days after an update, and for the player VoiD’s personal observations. It is the only first-hand source on this page: mitigation steps given by an official account in a community channel, not a formal Bellring fix announcement — there is no version number, no explanation of the mechanism, and we have not independently verified why disabling Intel AI Boost helps, which the page flags where it appears. The distinction between a crash and a hard freeze, and the list of details worth attaching to a report, are our own editorial organisation of the symptoms.
