How to Get the Key in Big Walk (and Open the Map Room)

By DayOneFix Editorial · August 24, 2026

There is no single key in Big Walk. Each colour area has its own: a golden key released from the back of that area’s control panel once you feed it five puzzle pieces, then shaped at five key cutters before it will fit anything. The one almost everybody is hunting for is the Red Tower key, because that’s the key that opens the Map Room — and the Map Room is where the map lives.

If you’re 90 minutes in and still navigating by shouting landmarks at each other, this is the page you want.

Almost everything below is community-documented. The official FAQ covers hosting, chat and troubleshooting and deliberately documents no puzzle content at all. We flag the few exceptions.

Which key do you actually need?

Big Walk’s progression is six keys deep, and confusingly they all look alike. This mapping comes from the Steam 100% achievement guide by tasselfoot and a one-page summary by Steam user Fish:

KeyMade atOpens
Starting-area keyThe key-unlocker in the tutorial area, fed 4 piecesThe Drawbridge — the first real gate out
Red Tower keyRed Tower control panel, 5 piecesThe Map Room
Green Tower keyGreen Tower control panel, 5 piecesThe chairlift
Yellow Tower keyYellow Tower control panel, 5 piecesThe tunnel system, and every other coloured door
Blue Tower keyBlue Tower control panel, 5 piecesThe trains
Black keyBlack Obelisk, 6 pieces, only after all five aboveThe gate at the Wall, far west

There is a seventh — a white key from the final fifteen pieces — but it belongs to the endgame and we’re not going to spoil where it goes.

The pieces themselves have no official name. Guide authors call them blorbs, Screen Hype calls them red control panel pieces, PC Gamer coined nubbins, players in Steam’s discussion forum call them red bulbs or just the red things, and Chinese players on Bilibili call them 葫芦 (gourds). They’re all the same object.

How to get the key for the Map Room

Three stages, and each one traps somebody:

1. Five puzzles, five pieces. Solve any five puzzles and carry a red piece back from each. Screen Hype’s walkthrough uses five clustered conveniently around the Red Tower — a silent-room pointing puzzle at 3760, 1430; a beach maze at 3840, 1350 where you hand a timer through a window; a pass-the-ball platform at 3740, 1620 where you cannot move while holding the ball; a basketball hoop at 3830, 1560 that took two players eight baskets with a thrown lantern; and a cannonball puzzle at 3880, 1520. But the same author is clear you can bring pieces from any puzzles you like.

2. Fill the control panel. The Red Tower stands on the mountain above at 3670, 1400. Put all five pieces in their slots on the roof panel and the golden key flies out the back of it. PC Gamer describes the same step as “placing five nubbins on the red tower’s roof,” which is a useful independent confirmation that this is really how it works.

3. Cut the key, five times. Take it downstairs to the cutter beside the tower door. Each cut shifts the machine’s top to reveal an arrow aimed at the next cutter, walking you down the mountain path; the fifth sits to the left of the staircase up to the Map Room. Only then does the key fit.

Put the finished key in the slot and the Map Room is open.

Where the Map Room is, and what’s inside

The Map Room entrance is at 3560, 1425 — a large blue building with a long red staircase, next to the first radio transmitter you meet after the drawbridge opens. PC Gamer places it “right next to the starting hub,” which matches.

What you get for the trip:

One caution reported repeatedly in Steam’s forum: players have lost the map and their bag contents after rejoining a session. If your map vanishes, that’s a known complaint rather than something you did wrong.

The achievement Big View (“Visit the map”) unlocks on arrival. As of 2026-08-24 it sits at 61.3% on Steam’s global stats — the second most-earned achievement in the game, and a decent sign that this is the step most groups reach.

Worth knowing: tasselfoot marks Big View, and the chairlift, tunnel and train achievements, as technically missable. They’re tied to using the thing you unlocked, not to unlocking it.

How to read Big Walk’s coordinates

Every coordinate on this page is in the game’s own system, and the map teaches it to you. This is also the answer to the beach puzzle everyone gets stuck on early — the frosted glass case with a sign reading two four-digit numbers, most famously 4166 1899.

They’re coordinates. Per PC Gamer’s walkthrough of that puzzle: the first two digits of each number are the numbered gridlines printed on the map’s edges, and the last two digits are how far into that grid square to go — so 4166 means gridline 41, about two thirds of the way across, and 1899 means gridline 18, right up against the next line. Where they cross is where the hidden button is. (PC Gamer labels the two axes latitude and longitude; it’s using the words loosely, so read them as “first number, second number”.)

You don’t strictly need the map for it. The GPS/coordinate tracker, in a red frame just outside the Green Tower, displays your current coordinates live — and it can be worn on someone’s backpack while a second player reads it and steers them. That’s the more entertaining solution, and it’s the only puzzle we’ve seen documented with two genuinely different intended tools.

FAQ

How do you get the key in Big Walk? Solve five puzzles for red control panel pieces, slot all five into that area’s tower control panel to release a golden key, then run the key through five key cutters, following the arrow each machine reveals. Only a fully cut key fits its lock.

Which key opens the Map Room? The Red Tower key. The Red Tower is on the mountain above the Map Room, at coordinates 3670, 1400 in community guides.

Where is the Map Room in Big Walk? At map coordinates 3560, 1425 — a large blue building with a long red staircase, by the first radio transmitter past the drawbridge, near the starting hub.

Where do you find the map in Big Walk? Inside the Map Room, on a table: a portable foldable map, plus a compass. There’s also a large floor map in the room and three laser pointers.

What do the two four-digit numbers on the signs mean? They’re coordinates. First two digits are the map’s numbered gridlines, last two are the position within that grid square. A handheld map or the GPS tracker outside the Green Tower will both get you there.

Can you get the key alone? No. Big Walk has no single-player mode, and the developers say the puzzles are built around teamwork and talking — the player-count page has the official wording.

The absence of a single-player mode and the teamwork-and-talking framing are the developers’ own words in the official Big Walk FAQ, checked 2026-08-24. The achievement Big View — “Visit the map” and its 61.3% completion rate come from Steam’s public achievement stats for app 1478500, read 2026-08-24; that number drifts.

The key chain itself is community documentation — House House publishes no walkthrough. The Map Room at 3560, 1425, the Red Tower at 3670, 1400, the five listed Red Tower puzzles and their coordinates, the golden key emerging from the back of the panel, and the five key cutters and their arrows come from fireboundfox’s Steam guide How to Unlock the Map Room and its full version by Lyssa Greywood at Screen Hype, checked 2026-08-24. The six-key progression table, the piece counts per tower, the Black Obelisk needing six pieces after all five colour keys, and the “technically missable” warning come from tasselfoot’s Big Walk 100% Achievement Guide; the tower-colour summary is corroborated by Steam user Fish’s BIG WALK GUIDE. Both read 2026-08-24.

The Map Room’s contents — floor map, handheld map, compass, three laser pointers, whiteboards, GPS tracker outside the Green Tower — come from Screen Hype’s item list, checked 2026-08-24. The 4166 1899 puzzle, the reading of four-digit coordinates as gridline-plus-fraction, the confirmation that five pieces go on the red tower’s roof and that the Map Room opens next to the starting hub, and the GPS as an alternative solution come from PC Gamer’s Big Walk number puzzle walkthrough, checked 2026-08-24 — the only mainstream-press puzzle documentation we found. PC Gamer’s use of “latitude” and “longitude” for the two axes is loose, and we have said so rather than repeating it. Reports of the map and bag contents disappearing after rejoining are player complaints in the Steam discussion forum (threads read 2026-08-24), not an acknowledged bug — House House has not commented on them in its patch notes. The nicknames for the collectible pieces are as used by those guide authors, by PC Gamer, by Steam forum posters, and by Chinese players on Bilibili; none of them is official.
