The best Shell in Mortal Shell II depends on when you ask — all 8 Shells, where they are, and the order most players actually get them

By DayOneFix Editorial · August 24, 2026

Take Tiel or Proxima first because they are nearly free, then detour for Gragu. For boss fights later, Eredrim is the most-cited pick. There is no single “best Shell” — the Shell system is Mortal Shell’s signature precisely because it swaps your class mid-run.

There are exactly 8 Shells

The Steam store page says so in the developer’s own words: “The forgotten Shells of eight lost warriors are scattered throughout Mortal Shell II’s ravaged world.” The achievement list then names seven of them directly, and Shell Seeker — Unlock all Shells closes the set.

The eighth, Genessa, is the one the achievement list hides: its achievement is called simply Sester with the description withheld. Guide sites name her, and the Chinese community found her fast — a Bilibili video titled 「开局拿修女杰妮莎躯壳和拳刃」 (“grab the Sister Genessa Shell early”) has roughly 8,400 plays.

Every Shell and where it is

ShellWhereHow you get it
TielMushroom Village / Widow’s Overlook, FainwealdInteract with his body in a shallow grave
Proxima, The BroodseekerShattered Beacon dungeon, northeast of Blackridge Pass beaconEnter and cleanse the dungeon — no fight required
GraguOne-Legged Wolf TavernBring him the Heart of Vatra
SmertProphet’s Rest, Outskirts of NochteComplete the blood ritual by making offerings
Eredrim, The VenerableCitadel of PenanceDefeat The Warden in the arena
GenessaMarrow Keep, via Revenant GravesDefeat Sester Secundus and return the Sester’s Censer
Sariel, The EndlessChamber of Becoming, Silent StepsFight Sariel twice; disable the lightning rods so she cannot resurrect
LazloRoyal Crypt, High Lord’s CourtyardDefeat Vellen, High Lord of Mammon

Tiel and Eredrim are returning names from the 2020 original; the other six are new. The gameplay reveal trailer in April named three of them — “Tiel, The Acolyte; Eredrim, The Venerable; and Proxima, The Broodseeker” — which is where those epithets come from.

Steam’s numbers tell you the real difficulty order

Every Shell unlock is an achievement, so the global completion rate is a direct measure of how far into the game each one sits. Read top to bottom, this is the order players actually find them:

ShellGlobal unlock rate
Tiel75.7%
Proxima72.0%
Eredrim42.3%
Gragu34.4%
Smert32.7%
Genessa (Sester)17.7%
Sariel17.4%
Lazlo15.1%
All eight (Shell Seeker)10.4%

Two things fall out of this. First, Tiel and Proxima are the near-mandatory early pair — three quarters of everyone who owns the game has both, which no optional detour achieves. Second, the drop from Smert (32.7%) to Genessa (17.7%) is the sharpest in the list; that is roughly where the game stops handing Shells out and starts hiding them.

Which Shell to take first

Tiel is the standard first pick — a body in a shallow grave, no fight. GamesRadar describes his value as a flat chance to take half damage, which “covers for some of the mistakes a new player makes”. Chinese guides agree: 御风逆流’s 「12 开局必拿刺客躯壳提尔」 (“the assassin Shell Tiel is a must-take at the start”) frames him the same way.

Proxima costs even less — she is lying on a coffin on the first level of the Shattered Beacon dungeon with nothing guarding her.

Gragu is the one worth an actual detour. He takes an extra step (bring the Heart of Vatra to the One-Legged Wolf Tavern) but he is the Shell the Chinese community fixated on hardest:

English coverage gives the mechanical reason: Gragu’s Staggering Blow is a charge attack that scales with how long you hold it, and Revered Heart heals him and refills on kills — a kit that keeps paying past the early game. Game8’s Gragu build claims it reaches 75%+ critical hit chance by stacking the Hunger ability with Revered Heart’s buff and Staggering Blow’s debuff; that specific figure comes from Game8 alone, so treat the number as their claim rather than a measured constant.

Which Shell for bosses

Eredrim is the most-cited boss killer. Two active abilities — a Shoulder Bash that dumps Break damage into one target, and a Bell that applies Break damage to everything around him — plus an Executioner passive that finishes low-health enemies. Break damage is how you open enemies up in this game, so a Shell that generates it on demand is doing the thing that matters most in a long fight.

Against groups, Genessa is the specialist: her Faithful Doubles clones let light-attack spam land several times over, which is the basis of the most-published clone build.

Do Shells level up?

Yes, at the Shellkeeper, through what the game calls a bonding tier — the achievement Decked Out — Reach the maximum bonding tier for a Shell at the Shellkeeper names both. Only 26.9% of players have maxed one, which is a hint that most people spread affection across several Shells rather than committing.

Each Shell also carries Shell Memories — cutscenes telling that warrior’s story. Haunting Times — Watch your first Shell Memory is at 64.1%; Seeking the Past — Watch all Shell Memories is at 1.0%, the second-rarest achievement in the game.

FAQ

What is the best Shell in Mortal Shell 2? There is no single answer. Tiel is the best early Shell for survivability, Gragu the best early Shell for damage, and Eredrim the most-recommended for bosses because of his Break damage.

How many Shells are there? Eight. The Steam store page says “eight lost warriors” and the achievement Shell Seeker — Unlock all Shells confirms the set is finite.

Which Shell should I get first? Tiel — no fight, and he sits on the starting route through Fainweald. Proxima is the second-cheapest at zero combat cost.

Where is Gragu? The One-Legged Wolf Tavern. You need to bring him the Heart of Vatra. He is the eighth-most-viewed topic on Bilibili for this game and the fourth-most-unlocked Shell on Steam at 34.4%.

Is Genessa a Shell? Yes — she is the eighth, and her achievement is the hidden one called Sester. She is unlocked at Marrow Keep after defeating Sester Secundus and returning the Sester’s Censer.

Do I lose a Shell after using it? Nothing published says so. What is documented is the opposite direction: Shells are collected and swapped, and the game tracks a bonding tier per Shell at the Shellkeeper.
