The best Mortal Shell II build is a Shell-plus-weapon package, not a stat spread — here are the eight that are actually published
By DayOneFix Editorial · August 24, 2026
There is no stat allocation in Mortal Shell II, so a “build” means five choices: Shell, weapon, sidearm, Seal, Tarstones. The most-cited package right now is Gragu + Axe and Dagger + Triarch Repeater + Vatra’s Seal + Duality Stone and Rupturing Stone — a critical-hit build that Game8 claims reaches 75%+ crit chance. That figure is Game8’s alone; the components are corroborated elsewhere.
The one component nearly every build shares
Duality Stone. It appears in six of the eight published builds, and it is the reason the Axe and Dagger tops the weapon tier list — Game8 states the Axe and Dagger is the only weapon that can slot both the Duality Stone and the Arbiter’s Prize.
The Chinese community reached the same conclusion on its own. 御风逆流’s 「21 开局最强二元之石(两段攻击)」 — “the strongest early Tarstone, Duality Stone, gives you two-stage attacks” — has roughly 14,200 plays, and 「格拉古+斧匕+二元之石=轮椅=通关」 (“Gragu + Axe-Dagger + Duality Stone = an easy-mode carry to the credits”) roughly 10,800. 二元之石 is the Chinese name for the Duality Stone, and it is the same stone the English builds are built on.
Where it is: a chest near the second gate of the Ravaged Tomb.
All eight published builds
Game8 documents one build per Shell. Reproduced here as a comparison table rather than a recommendation — the point is the pattern, which is that Shell ability and weapon are chosen together:
| Shell | Weapon | Sidearm | Seal | Key Tarstones | Idea |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gragu | Axe and Dagger | Triarch Repeater | Vatra’s Seal | Duality, Rupturing | Stack Hunger, Revered Heart and Staggering Blow into very high crit |
| Genessa | Axatana | Naylshotte | Untarnished Seal | Duality, Torpor | Spam lights so the Faithful Doubles clones multiply every hit |
| Smert | Axe and Dagger | Caged Hystrix | Untarnished Seal | Duality, Arbiter’s Prize | Build Chaos stacks unarmed during Miracle, then burst |
| Lazlo | Axatana | Ballistazooka | Vatra’s Seal | Duality, Fusillade | Rapid crits during Overheat, Rush raising crit chance |
| Proxima | Axatana | Triarch Repeater | Untarnished Seal | Duality, Rupturing | Stasis plus Lightning stacks, close the gap, burst |
| Tiel | Great Martyr’s Blade | Salvaged Trebuchaxe | Untarnished Seal | Wounding, Voltaic Crown | Guaranteed crits via Critical Role, boosted by Deathmark and Nightstride |
| Eredrim | The Iconoclast | Forgotten Crossbow | Untarnished Seal | Stillblade’s, Emberseed | Grind Break gauges down; Slaughterer stacks cut incoming damage |
| Sariel | Veteran’s Battle Axe | Caged Hystrix | Untarnished Seal | Grudge, Curseblood | Keep Trauma applied for damage-over-time Break, then riposte |
Two things worth noticing. The Untarnished Seal — the one you are given in the prologue — is in six of eight, so the starter Seal is not a placeholder. And every Axatana or Axe and Dagger build runs the Duality Stone, which is the whole argument for those two weapons.
All four Seals
Seals replace the shield in this game: each one changes what happens when you hold guard. There are exactly four.
| Seal | What holding guard does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Untarnished Seal | Guard, with a Perfect Guard on a timed press. The most forgiving parry window, and it still applies Break damage while cancelling the hit | Handed to you in the prologue, when the Harbinger claims Harros the Vassal |
| Vatra’s Seal | Harden — turn to stone to eat the next attack instance. Timed precisely it becomes a Perfect Harden, which deals Break damage | Not confirmed by a source we could read directly |
| Infinite Seal | A parry variant that pushes Break damage output further; the pick once your timing is reliable | Not confirmed by a source we could read directly |
| Slayer Seal | Periodically restores health and energy from certain actions — and locks you out of achievements | Reported by Chinese guides to be in a cave at the Bone Keep area |
The Slayer Seal deserves a warning label. Two independent communities describe it the same way. An English tier list calls it “the best item in the category” on pure power and says using it “effectively turns the game into an easy mode”, while noting it locks achievements. A Chinese WeChat guide calls it 「游戏官方外挂(但禁成就)」 — “an official cheat, but it bans achievements” — and 御风逆流’s Bilibili video is literally titled 「11 屠杀者印记锁成就」 (“the Slayer Seal locks achievements”), at roughly 2,700 plays. Two languages, two sources, same claim. We have not found the developer saying it, so treat it as very widely reported rather than officially confirmed — but do not equip it on a run you intend to platinum.
One Seal has already been changed. 御风逆流’s 「16 无尽印记正式版削弱」 (“the Infinite Seal was nerfed in the release version”, ~3,000 plays) reports the Infinite Seal is weaker in the launch build than it was in the beta. That is a single creator’s claim; the Steam news hub carries no balance patch note we could match it to, so treat the direction as a lead, not a number. There is a separate Bilibili video claiming the developer announced customisable difficulty via a special item — we could not locate that statement in the official news hub, so we are not treating it as confirmed either.
Tarstones: how many, and the two that matter
Tarstones slot into weapons and are the closest thing this game has to a stat system. The set is finite and completing it is one of the rarest achievements in the game — Stoned — Find all Tarstones sits at 3.5% of owners, the third-rarest of all 53.
A collection guide puts the total at 75 Tarstones. We saw that number in one place only and could not corroborate it, so it is that guide’s count, not a confirmed figure.
The two that recur across the published builds:
- Duality Stone — a chest near the second gate of the Ravaged Tomb. Doubles output; the reason the Axe and Dagger and Axatana rank where they do.
- Arbiter’s Prize — southeast of the Widow’s Overlook beacon. Turn around at the beacon, follow the path to a clearing with ruins and dead trees, and kill the Great Arbiter of Flesh miniboss.
Chinese guides add 狂战士之石 (Berserker’s Stone) as a mandatory early pickup for Gragu specifically — 御风逆流 again, ~8,300 plays. The stone appears in English Tarstone lists, so the name is real; the “mandatory for Gragu” framing is that creator’s recommendation.
Weapon upgrades happen at the Tarforge, and almost nobody finishes one: Over 9000 — Max out a Weapon at the Tarforge is at 15.3%. Whatever build you pick, the practical constraint is that you can afford to max roughly one weapon in a first playthrough.
A build you can assemble in the first few hours
Everything below is verified individually elsewhere on this site; assembled, it is the cheapest strong opening:
- Tiel from the shallow grave near Mushroom Village, or Gragu from the One-Legged Wolf Tavern if you are willing to fetch the Heart of Vatra
- Axe and Dagger from the Shrine of Trials — needs the Chapel Key, no boss
- Forgotten Crossbow from the Flooded Village dungeon near Blackridge Pass — needs the Damp Key
- Untarnished Seal, which you already have
- Duality Stone as soon as you reach the Ravaged Tomb
FAQ
What is the best build in Mortal Shell 2? Gragu with the Axe and Dagger, Triarch Repeater, Vatra’s Seal, Duality Stone and Rupturing Stone is the most-cited. Game8 claims it exceeds 75% critical hit chance.
What is the best Seal? The Slayer Seal is the strongest, but it locks achievements. Of the four, the Untarnished Seal is what six of eight published builds actually use.
What are the best Tarstones? Duality Stone first — it appears in most published builds — then Arbiter’s Prize. Only the Axe and Dagger can hold both at once.
How many Tarstones are there? One collection guide says 75; we could not corroborate that count. What is confirmed is that the set is finite and that only 3.5% of Steam owners have completed it.
Are there stat points or levels? No stat allocation is documented. Progression runs through Shell bonding tiers at the Shellkeeper, weapon upgrades at the Tarforge, and Tarstones.
Does the Slayer Seal really block trophies? Two independent sources — an English tier list and Chinese guides — both say yes. The developer has not said so in any post we could find, so avoid it on an achievement run rather than testing the claim.

The eight build packages, the ability names and the 75%+ critical hit claim are Game8’s, from its best builds page, checked 24 August 2026; the Axe and Dagger’s exclusive access to both Duality Stone and Arbiter’s Prize is from the same site’s weapon tier list. Seal behaviour, the count of four, and the Slayer Seal’s achievement lock come from published English Seal tier lists surfaced 24 August 2026, cross-checked against Chinese coverage: a WeChat guide describing the Slayer Seal as 「游戏官方外挂(但禁成就)」 and a Bilibili video by 御风逆流 titled 「11 屠杀者印记锁成就」, both found via 搜狗微信搜索 and Bilibili search on 24 August 2026. Neither the achievement lock nor the Infinite Seal nerf appears in any developer post on the Steam news hub, which we read the same day — that absence is why both are labelled reported rather than confirmed. Tarstone locations for the Duality Stone and Arbiter’s Prize come from published location guides checked 24 August 2026; the total of 75 Tarstones is a single guide’s count and is labelled as such in the text. The Stoned (3.5%) and Over 9000 (15.3%) completion figures, and the names Tarforge and Shellkeeper, are from Mortal Shell II’s own Steam achievement page, read 24 August 2026; Valve’s percentages move over time.
