Is Mortal Shell 2 co-op? No — it is single-player only, and one beta sentence confused everyone

By DayOneFix Editorial · August 17, 2026

No. Mortal Shell II is single-player only — no co-op, no PvP, no multiplayer of any kind, on any of its three platforms.

Re-checked on launch day, 20 August: the Steam listing still carries only the Single-player category. Nothing changed at release.

Since plenty of people are searching the question three days before launch, here is the evidence rather than just the assertion.

The evidence

1. The Steam category list. The listing carries Single-player and nothing else in the play-mode family — no Co-op, no Online Co-op, no Multi-player, no PvP, no Shared/Split Screen, no Remote Play Together. Developers set these categories, and multiplayer is a selling point no store page omits.

2. No announcement mentions it. The official reveal covering release date, pricing and editions says nothing about multiplayer. The gameplay reveal describes three playable Shells carving “a different trail through Mortal Shell II’s interconnected open world” — a description of build variety, not of other players.

3. The first game was single-player too. Mortal Shell (2020) shipped and stayed single-player. A sequel quietly adding multiplayer without announcing it does not happen — multiplayer is marketing’s favourite word.

The sentence that caused the confusion

When the open beta reached consoles on 31 July, the announcement said it was:

“giving console players the chance to join Steam players in the dark, dystopian world”

Read quickly, that sounds like crossplay. It is not — it means the beta, previously Steam-only, became available on PS5 and Xbox too. Console players “joined” the beta audience, not Steam players’ game sessions. Nothing in the same announcement describes connecting to another player, because there is no mechanism to.

Does Mortal Shell II have crossplay?

No — crossplay is not applicable, because there is no multiplayer to play across. Mortal Shell II is single-player only on all three platforms: Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The real cross-platform question for a single-player game is cross-save, and no announcement addresses that either way.

Store categories from the Steam listing, checked 17 August 2026 — specifically the presence of Single-player and Family Sharing and the absence of every multiplayer-family category. The “join Steam players” line is quoted from the official 31 July beta announcement; the release details are from the official 8 July reveal, both on the Steam news hub. The 2020 original’s single-player status is from its own store listing. No developer statement about multiplayer exists as of this date — which is itself the finding.
