Mistfall Hunter Controls: Parry, Sprint and the Missing Lock-On

By DayOneFix Editorial · August 7, 2026

The most common Mistfall Hunter control question has an unsatisfying answer: there is no lock-on. It isn’t a bug, it isn’t buried in a menu, and no keybind enables it. Everything else on this page follows from that one design choice.

Where the keybind menu actually is

Start here, because a lot of people never find it. If you open Settings from the main menu, you’ll see camera options and no key bindings — which reads like the game shipped without rebinding.

It didn’t. The keybind settings are only reachable once you’re in the game, at camp. A player worked this out by accident and posted it in the Steam thread about missing keybindings:

“Just enter the game and then you can change it. I discovered it by chance when I went into the settings while I was in my camp.”

A Bellring account replied in the same thread confirming the issue was resolved. So: load in, get to camp, then open settings. That in-game Controls screen is also the authoritative list of what your build can actually bind — more reliable than any article, including this one.

Lock-on: it doesn’t exist, and here’s the evidence

The Steam store page describes “a precision free-aim system” that lets you “target your enemies’ weak points.” That’s the design intent stated positively.

GamingTrend’s review states it plainly: “Mistfall Hunter feels less like Dark Souls and more like a standard third-person ARPG. There’s no lock-on system or gear weight mechanics.”

Players have asked for one repeatedly. In a feature-request thread listing sprint, lock-on, larger parties and a PvE-only option, a Bellring developer replied only: “Thanks for your feedback. We shall consider it seriously and keep improving.” That is not a commitment, and no lock-on has been announced since.

Whether this is a problem depends on your input device. In the “No Lock On?” thread, one mouse player dismissed the whole idea — “who uses that in literally any game that you can control the camera with a mouse” — and a controller player pushed straight back with “People who prefer playing with Controller?” Both are right about their own setup. On a stick, free aim is a real skill tax.

The clipping problem, and what to do about it

Free aim plus a fast melee game produces a specific complaint that fills the Steam forums: attacks passing through enemies. From the combat feedback thread, players describe “clipping through enemies a lot of the time,” swings that “kept right through the enemy at point blank range,” and casters losing targets because “by the time you locate…tiny crosshairs…the target has moved.”

A Bellring representative replied in that thread that the feedback would be taken seriously — no fix announced.

What actually helps in the meantime:

Parry is a class ability, not a universal button

This trips up players coming from FromSoftware games. In Mistfall Hunter, parry belongs to specific classes and weapon stances — it is not a global defensive option every character has.

The clearest confirmation is Bellring’s own DevNote #7, which lists a balance change for one class specifically:

“Withered Knight - Greatsword Adjustments: The ‘Parry’ skill now unlocks at an earlier level, and the Parry Counter window has been extended.”

A skill that “unlocks at a level” for one class is not a mechanic everyone has. Game Rant’s guide describes the Withered Knight as the class with “the ability to parry blows, and to counterattack with deadly precision.”

Blocking is similarly weapon-bound. The August 6 patch notes reference the “Mercenary - Sword and Shield” auto-block behaviour, and DevNote #7 describes the Withered Knight’s new Polearm & Shield stance as able to “charge up power while actively blocking damage, preparing for a devastating counterattack.”

And shields will never be a full answer, by design. From the July 10 AMA:

“Allowing shields to mitigate 100% of incoming damage would overly reward passive play and make combat incredibly dull. However, we have left room in our equipment loadout system for players to build toward an exceptionally high damage-reduction rate when blocking.”

So if you want to parry, that’s a class choice made at character creation, not a technique you can pick up later on whatever you’re already playing.

Sprint

We can’t give you a clean answer here, so here’s the honest state of it.

Sprint appears in the community’s feature-request list alongside lock-on, which suggests players don’t have the always-available sprint they expect from other action games. Bellring’s only public response to that list was the generic acknowledgment quoted above. Meanwhile the official patch notes reference a Withered Knight skill named “Sprinting Slash” and adjust its Energy cost — so some form of sprint exists inside the combat system.

We could not confirm a dedicated universal sprint bind in the release build, so we’re not going to tell you there is one. Load in, get to camp, open the Controls list, and it will tell you exactly what your build binds. If it’s there, it’s there.

Stagger, stun-lock and Breakaway

Two things worth knowing before your first PvP loss feels unfair, both stated by Bellring in the July 10 AMA:

If you’re losing fights to chain CC and it feels like the game, not you — it’s partly the game, and the developer says so.

FAQ

Does Mistfall Hunter have lock-on targeting? No. The game ships with a free-aim system by design — it is not a bug and no keybind enables it. GamingTrend’s review states there is no lock-on system, and Bellring’s only response to player requests for one has been a generic “we shall consider it seriously,” with nothing announced since.

Where is the keybind menu in Mistfall Hunter? It is only reachable in-game, at camp — not from the main menu’s settings screen, which shows camera options but no key bindings. Load in, get to camp, then open settings.

Can every class parry in Mistfall Hunter? No. Parry belongs to specific classes and weapon stances — the Withered Knight’s greatsword has a “Parry” skill that unlocks at a level, per Bellring’s DevNote #7. If you want to parry, that is a class choice made at character creation, not a technique any character can pick up.

Is there a sprint button? We could not confirm a dedicated universal sprint bind in the release build. Sprint appears on the community’s feature-request list, and the only “sprint” in official patch notes is the Withered Knight skill “Sprinting Slash.” The in-game Controls list at camp is the authoritative answer for your build.

Why do my attacks pass through enemies? It is a widely reported free-aim complaint — Bellring has acknowledged the feedback but announced no fix. What helps: treat the reticle as your weapon’s direction, fight at your weapon’s range rather than point-blank, and lower camera sensitivity on a controller.

Sources

The line that the keybinding menu only opens in the in-game camp comes from a player’s own account in a Steam discussion thread, where a Bellring account also replied to confirm the issue had been resolved. The “precise free-aim system” and “aim at enemy weak points” wording is from the Steam store page; “no lock-on system and no equipment-weight mechanic” is from GamingTrend’s review. The player wishlist and Bellring’s stock reply are from the feature-request thread, the mouse-versus-controller argument from the “No Lock On?” thread, and the reports of attacks passing through enemies from the combat-feedback thread — everything in quotation marks there is a player’s own wording, community reporting rather than official confirmation. The Withered Knight greatsword’s Parry unlock level and timing window, the polearm and shield stances, the Mercenary sword-and-board auto-block, the Energy-cost change to “Sprinting Slash”, and the July 10 AMA points about shields not negating 100% of damage, the only way to cancel a stagger being Breakaway, infinite crowd-control chains and diminishing returns all come from Bellring’s DevNotes and patch notes on the Steam news page. Game Rant’s tips guide corroborates the Withered Knight’s parry role. The sprint section is deliberately left open: we could find no official or otherwise verifiable source for a universal sprint bind in the release build, so the page says it cannot be confirmed and sends you to the in-game control list in camp. Treating the reticle as your weapon’s direction, staying inside your weapon’s reach, and lowering stick sensitivity are our own handling advice derived from those mechanics, not statements from Bellring.
