Big Walk connection issues — start with the clock, not the router

Lag or disconnects on launch day?

Half the launch-week "server errors" we trace are routing problems between you and the game servers, not the servers themselves. A game booster reroutes that path. GearUP is the one we point people to: it supports most new releases within a day of launch.

Most Big Walk connection guides send you straight to your router. The developers’ own troubleshooting points somewhere far less obvious, and it explains the worst version of the problem — the one where nothing works at all.

The fix almost nobody mentions: your system clock

If you can’t join a friend’s game and can’t host one yourself, check your device’s clock before anything else.

If the system clock varies from the online clock by a significant amount, it will prevent you from either joining a game, or hosting anyone else.

That is from the official FAQ, and it is the cleanest explanation for the total-failure case. A clock that has drifted — common on a console that has been unplugged, a PC with a dying CMOS battery, or any device with automatic time sync switched off — breaks the connection handshake outright, with no error message that points at time.

Turn on automatic date and time on every device in the group and re-check. If one player is the only one who can never connect anywhere, this is the first thing to rule out.

The host-side checks

Big Walk sessions are player-hosted and the host carries the save, so most remaining failures are host state rather than network quality:

When your friend’s game won’t appear in the list

This is a different problem from “can’t connect”, and it has its own official answer:

One thing to know before you paste a code into a stream chat: anyone who has your join code can join, as can any friend of any player already in your session. If you’re streaming, keep the code and password off-screen. You can set or change a password at any time from Session Details, and remove people from Session DetailsModeration Settings.

The version trap

Big Walk version numbers look like 1.4.8, and only the first two numbers need to match for players to play together. That is generous — but it means your group can be running different builds with nothing warning you about it. It matters most for the voice volume fix in 1.4.8: someone still on an older 1.4.x connects perfectly and stays quiet, and you will spend the session blaming their microphone.

The rest of the checklist

If the clock is right, the host is loaded in, and versions line up:

Crossplay isn’t the problem

Crossplay is on by default and platform mixing is fully supported — PC, Mac, PS5 and Switch 2 all play together, with no toggle to find. If cross-platform friends can’t see each other, the cause is the friends-list limitation above or a stale join code, not a crossplay setting. Details: crossplay & platforms.

The system-clock cause, the host-loaded requirement, the lower-left connection warnings, the Mac App Store friends-list limitation, join-code behaviour and the version-matching rule all come from the official Big Walk FAQ. File verification and runtime repair are standard PC steps that resolve launch-window cases reported on the Steam discussions.
