Lag or disconnects on launch day?

Half the launch-week "server errors" we trace are routing problems between you and the game servers, not the servers themselves. A game booster reroutes that path. GearUP is the one we point people to: it supports most new releases within a day of launch.

“Black screen” gets used for at least three unrelated failures in Big Walk, which is why generic guides don’t help. Sort yours first — the answers are genuinely different.

The Connecting loop: check your clock first

If you cannot join a friend’s game and cannot host one yourself, House House’s own troubleshooting names a cause that no aggregator page mentions:

If the system clock varies from the online clock by a significant amount, it will prevent you from either joining a game, or hosting anyone else.

This is worth trying before anything else, because it matches the reported symptom pattern precisely — the Steam thread that opened this problem describes a player whose friend got a black screen when hosting and an endless Connecting when joining by room code, Steam invite, or server list. Both directions failing at once is exactly what a drifted clock produces, and it produces no error that mentions time.

Turn on automatic date and time on every device and retest. The full list of connection causes — host not loaded into the world, connection warnings in the lower-left, the Mac App Store friends-list limitation, and the version-matching rule — is on the connection checklist.

Black screen with the game still running

Several players describe hosting, getting a black screen, and still hearing themselves move and jump. That is not a connection failure — the session exists and you are in it. Two things are worth knowing:

Beyond that, the honest position holds: the original reporter had already restarted, verified files, reinstalled, and updated drivers with no change, so those four steps have no track record against this specific fault. If you’ve done them, cycling through them again is not the answer.

”My save disappeared” is not a bug

One reporter said a save did not appear when rejoining. That has a clean official explanation, and it catches a lot of groups:

The host is the keeper of the save. Progress is saved automatically by whoever hosts, so to continue where you left off, the same person must host again. If someone else opens the session, you get their save file — which may be empty — and yours is untouched but invisible. It is not lost; it’s on the original host’s machine.

This also means: when the host stops the session, everyone is disconnected. Choose a host who can attend every session.

Whole computer black screen with fans spiking

One player described their entire PC going black and unresponsive after a few minutes, with fans ramping hard, while heavier games ran fine. Treat this as a separate class of problem — a machine that stops responding at the operating-system level is not something a game patch fixes. Check thermals and GPU drivers, and if it reproduces, it will likely reproduce in other sustained loads too.

Note that Big Walk’s minimum specification is not light for a game that looks gentle: 12 GB RAM and a 64-bit OS, with the GPU floor around a GTX 750 Ti. If your framerate is poor rather than crashing, the official tuning order is: lower Render Scale in SettingsGraphics, then lower Quality, then raise Render Scale back up gradually.

The Linux Proton report

One participant reported the same problem on Linux and said forcing Proton 11.0 resolved it. Keep the scope narrow: Steam lists Big Walk for Windows and macOS, so Linux play already runs through a compatibility layer, and this is one player’s result rather than a documented fix. Another player on macOS reported that their issue resolved itself with no stated cause — an unexplained recovery, recorded here for honesty, not as a method.

FAQ

Why is Big Walk stuck on “Connecting”? If you can’t join a friend’s game and can’t host one yourself, check your system clock first. House House’s own troubleshooting says a clock that varies significantly from the online clock blocks both joining and hosting — and it produces no error that mentions time. Turn on automatic date and time on every device and retest.

Why is my screen black but I can hear myself jump and move? The game is running and you are in the session — rendering or session load failed, not the connection. Note that a host stuck on a black screen also fails every incoming join, since the host must be loaded into the world before others can connect.

Why did my Big Walk save disappear? Almost always because a different person hosted. The host is the keeper of the save — progress saves automatically to whoever hosts, so the same person must host again to continue. Your save isn’t lost; it’s on the original host’s machine.

My whole PC goes black with fans spiking — is that a Big Walk bug? No. A machine that stops responding at the operating-system level is a hardware or driver hang, not something a game patch fixes. Check thermals and GPU drivers.

Will restarting, verifying files, or reinstalling fix the black screen? For this specific fault, those steps have no track record — the original reporter had already done all four (plus a driver update) with no change. Don’t cycle through them again.
