How many players is Halloween: The Game? Five — one Michael Myers against four

By DayOneFix Editorial · August 24, 2026

Five players per match. Halloween: The Game is 1v4 asymmetrical multiplayer — one Michael Myers against four heroes. That is the official number, stated the same way by the developer and by every storefront that lists a range.

Where the number comes from

SourceWhat it says
Official multiplayer overview1v4 asymmetrical, one Michael Myers versus four
Steam store blurb”1v4 asymmetrical multiplayer matches”
Xbox store capability flags”Online co-op 2-5”, “Online multiplayer 2-5”
PlayStation Store listingUp to 5 online players; PS Plus required for online play

The Xbox flags are the only place a number other than five appears, and they are not a contradiction. Those capability flags describe a supported range, not the shape of a match — Xbox uses the same two-number field for every online game on the store. The design number, everywhere it is stated in words, is 1v4. What nobody has published is the minimum number of humans a match needs before it starts, so treat “2” as a store field, not as a promise that a two-player lobby works.

The PS Plus line matters more than it looks: on PS5 the four-versus-one is online-only content, so a subscription sits between you and every multiplayer match on that platform.

The asymmetry, side by side

The five players are not doing the same job, and the split is what makes the player count worth explaining rather than just stating.

Michael Myers (one player). His officially described kit:

His win condition is to eliminate all the civilians plus specific targets.

The four heroes. Their objective is not “survive until a timer runs out”. They have to run a loop:

  1. Find the NPC residents scattered around the map
  2. Persuade them that the danger is real
  3. Escort them to an escape point within a time limit — and the escape points are randomised, so the route is not memorisable between matches
  4. Manage the escalation: calling the police brings more patrols into the map

NPC residents can also be commanded and handed weapons, which is the part most player-count summaries drop entirely.

Only one killer exists. Michael Myers is the sole playable killer, and a second one has never been announced.

Why Steam tags it both PvP and Co-op

The Steam listing carries both PvP and Co-op categories, which reads like a contradiction and gets copied into aggregator pages as “has a co-op mode”. It does not mean that.

The co-op is inside the PvP match. Four heroes cooperating against one human killer is genuinely co-operative play — shared objective, shared failure, proximity voice — while the match as a whole is player versus player. One tag describes the lobby; the other describes what four of the five people in it are doing.

No separate co-op mode has been announced — nothing describes four players against an AI Michael, and nothing describes a co-op version of the story campaign. The story mode that does exist is single-player and you play as Michael; we cover what the single-player campaign actually is separately.

Bots and AI fill: not announced

There is no announced bot system. Nothing states whether an incomplete lobby is filled with AI, whether a disconnected player is replaced by AI, or whether you can play a private match against bots. Do not plan around it.

This is the single easiest thing to get wrong about this game, because the game is full of AI characters. The NPC residents you persuade and escort are AI — but they are the objective, not substitutes for players. A match with three humans on the hero side does not become a five-player match because there are NPCs walking around Haddonfield. Two different systems, one of them announced and one of them not.

What is still unannounced

Two further details come from that same developer Q&A rather than from the official site: proximity voice chat is confirmed, and players who queue as a group are reported to stay on the same team in matchmaking.

FAQ

How many players are in a Halloween: The Game match? Five — one player as Michael Myers and four as heroes, in a 1v4 asymmetrical match. Xbox’s store flags read “2-5” because that field describes a supported range, not the match design.

Can you play Halloween: The Game with bots? Not announced. No source describes AI filling empty slots or an offline match against an AI Michael. The AI townspeople in the game are the escort objective, not player substitutes.

Is Halloween: The Game co-op or PvP? Both tags are on the Steam page and both are accurate: the four heroes co-operate with each other inside a match that is player versus player against a human Michael. There is no announced standalone co-op mode.

Do you need PS Plus for Halloween: The Game? For online play on PS5, yes — the PlayStation Store listing states PS Plus is required.

How long is a match? Unstated. There is a timer on the escort objective, but no published match duration.

The 1v4 structure and the five-player match come from IllFonic’s official multiplayer gameplay overview and the “1v4 asymmetrical multiplayer matches” line on the Steam listing, both checked 24 August 2026. The “Online co-op 2-5” and “Online multiplayer 2-5” capability flags are read off the Xbox store listing; the five-player maximum and the PS Plus requirement are read off the PlayStation Store listing for the PS5 version. Michael’s abilities, the persuade-and-escort objective loop, the randomised escape points, the police escalation and the commandable armed NPCs are all stated on the official site’s gameplay pages. The hero names come from the official Heroes of Haddonfield and legacy characters posts — nine names, from which the count of ten falls one short. The ten-heroes-at-launch figure, proximity chat and the party-stays-together behaviour are not on the official site: they are IllFonic’s Jordan Mathewson as relayed in Horror Geek Life’s developer Q&A, and we mark them as reported rather than official. Bots, AI fill, match length, a second killer, the tenth hero and the server model have no source at all as of this date — that absence is the finding, not an omission on our part.
