Vesna and Vodyanitsa teams without Odette — what actually works

By DayOneFix Editorial · September 21, 2026

Every 7.1 team guide — Chinese and English alike — prints the same four names, and Odette is one of them. One Chinese writeup goes further and calls her “the hidden core” of the whole Stellar Swirl system.

That is awkward timing. Odette’s banner closed on 1 September, three weeks before 7.1 went live on 23 September. A lot of people pulling Vesna or Vodyanitsa on day one simply do not have her, and will not have another chance until she reruns.

So: what does the team look like without her, and what does it actually cost?

Day-one status, 24 September. 7.1 is live — maintenance ran 06:00 (UTC+8) on 23 September for about five hours. Re-checked against HoYoverse’s official Version 7.1 Update Details: both characters shipped as announced, and the kit summaries below match the official wording. Not re-checked: every damage figure, multiplier and constellation value on this page is still the pre-release beta calculation it was written from. Those need live-version testing, which is not done yet — they are flagged again where they appear.

The standard team, and where Odette sits in it

There are two versions of “standard” in circulation, and they disagree on exactly one slot:

SourceSlot 1Slot 2Slot 3Slot 4
Chinese launch guidesVesnaVodyanitsaOdetteFaruzan
English guides (Game8, Icy Veins, GameWith)VesnaVodyanitsaOdetteCryo Traveler

Note what does not vary. Slot 3 is Odette in both. The disagreement is only about whether the fourth slot goes to Faruzan for the Anemo RES shred or to Cryo Traveler for a second Cryo applicator — and Chinese calculations put those two within noise of each other, with a caveat we will come back to.

Odette is in the team because Vesna needs constant off-field Cryo to trigger Stellar Swirl at all, and Odette’s dancing shadow applies it over a wide area without needing to be on the field. That is the same structural property that made her the answer in 7.0.

What not having her costs

The one number worth knowing, from Chinese beta calculations on a four-copy team: swapping Odette from C2 down to C0 drops team DPS from roughly 254,000 to 192,000 — about a 24% loss, with every other unit held constant.

Read that carefully, because it is easy to misread. That is C2 versus C0 — it is not “with Odette” versus “without Odette”. It is the gap between owning her twice over and owning her once. Nobody has published a clean with-versus-without figure yet. That is the number this page will add, and now that the team can actually be run it is the next thing we test.

What it does tell you: Odette’s constellations carry real weight in this system, so a C0 Odette you already own is worth slotting, and a borrowed C2 from a friend’s support list is worth more than it looks.

Running it without her

Three substitutes come up consistently in the Chinese guides, and all three are Cryo units whose job is the same — keep Cryo on the target while Vesna swirls it.

1. Cryo Traveler — the free one. Named in every list, and the only substitute that costs nothing. English guides put the Traveler in the standard four outright rather than treating them as a fallback, which is the strongest version of this recommendation you will find. The Chinese caveat is worth repeating though: the Traveler has no perfectly fitted artifact set. Heart of the Furnace does not stack with itself, so if another party member is already wearing it the Traveler cannot double up, and Tenacity of the Millelith’s ATK buff is reportedly worth less to Vesna than Elemental Mastery would be. Workable, not optimal, free. For most people that is the right trade.

2. Qiqi. Cryo application plus healing, which matters more here than usual because Vesna wants to stay on the field for a full rotation.

3. Diona. Cryo application, shielding and interruption resistance — the survivability pick if you are losing rotations to getting knocked around.

If you have Faruzan, she is the Anemo RES shred that Chinese guides put in slot 4, and at higher constellations she adds Anemo crit damage on top. Sucrose is the named fallback for a low-constellation Faruzan.

The other direction: Vodyanitsa without Vesna

This question comes up enough that one Chinese guide opens with it. If you pulled the support and skipped the DPS, Vodyanitsa is far from stranded — she is a Hydro catalyst who shreds Hydro, Cryo and Anemo resistance by herself, heals the on-field character, and grants interruption resistance. That package travels.

The teams named for her outside Stellar Swirl:

One reality check on Vesna’s constellations

Chinese calculations put Vesna’s C0 Stellar Swirl multiplier at about 30.35, C1 at 39.53 and C2 at 45.02. For comparison, Sandrone’s C0 Stellar Superconduct multiplier is quoted at 49.55.

If those figures survive to release, a C2 Vesna is still only approaching what a C0 Sandrone does. The same writeup notes Vesna is locked to a single Anemo slot and has heavier energy pressure than Sandrone — her signature weapon granting energy recharge is offered as circumstantial support for that reading.

The practical conclusion drawn there: C0 Vesna opens the door to the Stellar Swirl system, but C2 is the bar for her being a fully competitive on-field carry. C1 is reported to be a bigger step than her signature weapon, and C1-plus-signature cheaper than going to C2.

Where the sources disagree

Two conflicts worth knowing before you spend anything, both left open here rather than papered over:

There is also a reported second round of pre-release nerfs to Vodyanitsa’s C1, C2 and C6. Those were beta adjustments; the live values are what count now, and we have not verified them against the shipped build.

Sources and what is settled

Settled, from HoYoverse directly: 7.1 went live on 23 September 2026 after a five-hour maintenance window that began at 06:00 (UTC+8). The official Version 7.1 Update Details confirms both characters as they were announced — Vesna, “Snowy Banquet’s Sharp Blade”, Anemo, sword, described there as an Anemo DMG dealer who enables her party to trigger Stellar Swirl; and Vodyanitsa, “Lingering Siren-Song”, Hydro, catalyst, described as a healer-support suited to both Freeze and Stellar Swirl teams. See the 7.1 countdown page for the announcement trail and banner timing.

Not settled: every damage figure, multiplier and constellation value on this page. Those come from Chinese beta calculation writeups published before launch, cross-checked against Game8, Icy Veins and GameWith team guides where they overlap. Where the two bodies of sources disagree, both readings are printed above rather than averaged.

Checked on 24 September, the day after launch. What changed: the character lines above are now confirmed against the official update notes rather than the pre-release showcases. What has not changed: the damage, multiplier and constellation figures are still pre-release calculations, and this page says so rather than quietly presenting them as live numbers.
