The Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter demo: how far it goes, whether your save carries over, and what is missing from it

The demo has been live since 19 August 2026 and most of the questions people ask about it are answered in Falcom’s own announcement — including the one that actually matters, which is whether the hours you put in are wasted when the full game arrives on 17 September.
Your save carries over
Falcom’s announcement is unambiguous: “Save data can be carried over to the full version of the game to continue the journey.” GungHo’s own post puts it the same way — all progress made in the demo carries over at launch. So the demo is not a walled-off slice; it is the opening of the real game, played early.
Two things to be careful about anyway:
- Falcom adds the standard caveat that “some specifications from the demo may differ from the final version.” Carry-over is promised; identical balance and text are not.
- Update before you play far. Demo 1.00.2 (3 September) fixed an issue where S-Crafts could sometimes not be acquired after the battle with Kurt. The patch repairs affected saves — “S-Crafts will be automatically acquired when loading save data after this update” — but only once you are on 1.00.2. Playing a long stretch on 1.00.0 and carrying that save forward is the one way to get bitten.
This is separate from the 1st Chapter clear-data bonus. Finishing the first game and carrying that clear data into 2nd Chapter grants bonus items, and Clouded Leopard’s Asian announcement lists classic-style SC costumes for Estelle and Joshua. Demo carry-over and 1st Chapter carry-over are two different mechanisms; you can use both.
How much game the demo actually is
You play “up through Chapter 1 of the story,” picking up immediately after 1st Chapter ends. Falcom’s list of what is in it:
- Grancel, Rolent and Ruan regions of Liberl
- Le Locle Canyon, framed as senior-bracer work
- Estelle and allies as the playable party
- The investigation that opens the chapter, with its boss fights
For a Trails game, “the prologue plus Chapter 1” is not a twenty-minute taster. Expect several hours, and expect the fishing minigame and the combat systems — new Crafts and S-Crafts, Brave Rush on Quick Battles, the orbment system — to be present rather than locked.
What is not in the demo
Viewer Mode and Movie Viewer are unavailable. Those are the gallery features, so nothing that gates story progress, but worth knowing if you were planning to browse cutscenes.
Beyond that, the boundary is simply the end of Chapter 1. There is no separate “demo build” of the areas you can reach.
The two demo patches, and what they tell you
| Patch | Date | Fixed |
|---|---|---|
| 1.00.1 | 26 August 2026 | Crash when starting the fishing minigame; Olivier’s English voice not playing during his song sequence |
| 1.00.2 | 3 September 2026 | S-Crafts sometimes not acquired after the Kurt battle (auto-granted on load after updating); game starting on a different monitor than the one selected in Options |
Both are Falcom’s own Steam announcements. The pattern is reassuring for launch day: the bugs found in the demo were specific, reproducible and patched within a week, not engine-level. The wrong-monitor bug is the one PC players with multi-monitor setups should expect to have followed the demo into the full build if they skip updates.
Platforms, and the Switch 2 question
The demo is on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Steam. GungHo states plainly that “the Nintendo Switch demo is playable on Nintendo Switch 2 via backward compatibility” — so there is no separate Switch 2 demo to look for, even though the full game does get a distinct Switch 2 Edition at $64.99.
On Steam the demo is Windows-only (no macOS or Linux build), lists Traditional and Simplified Chinese text alongside English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Korean, and asks for roughly a Ryzen 5 1600, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 1050 for 1080p60 on the Performance graphics profile.
If you have never touched the series, note that 1st Chapter has its own free prologue demo on Steam, and its save also carries into that game’s full version. Falcom’s recommended order is unchanged: play 1st Chapter first, because the 2nd Chapter demo spoils it from its opening minutes.
