Is there a Phantom Blade Zero demo? What leaked, what State of Play said, and where the physical edition stands

Demo status: none available on PS5, Steam or Epic as of 3 September. Steam's store data lists no demo app; the PlayStation Store listing that appeared on 12 August was removed the same day.
What S-GAME has said: nothing. The dedicated State of Play on 18 August ran ~20 minutes and did not mention a public demo.

Short answer: no. There is no playable Phantom Blade Zero demo on any store as of 20 September 2026, and S-GAME has not announced one. What exists is a rumour with a precise paper trail — and that trail is why so many people are searching.

What actually happened

12 August: a PlayStation Store listing for a Phantom Blade Zero demo appeared and was pulled. Push Square, which reported it, was careful: it was “just a listing, and didn’t give access to the demo itself.” The expectation at the time was that a demo would follow the State of Play scheduled for 18 August 2026.
18 August: Sony ran a dedicated State of Play deep dive — roughly 20 minutes on story, characters, progression and combat, including the difficulty ladder from the cinematic Wayfarer mode to 66 Days, which ends the game permanently after 66 deaths. No demo was mentioned. No physical edition was announced either.
Since then: nothing. Steam’s store data for the game lists no demo application, and S-GAME’s own Steam announcements — the pre-order post of 13 August and the creative director’s letter from June — say nothing about a public demo.

So the honest state is: a listing existed for a few hours, which usually means a build exists somewhere in Sony’s pipeline, but “exists in a pipeline” and “you can download it” are different things. We will update this page the day a demo goes live or S-GAME rules one out.

Hands-on builds that did exist

If you have seen footage of people playing, that is the event circuit, not a home demo. S-GAME’s own timeline, from the creative director’s June letter: first reveal in 2023, a first offline hands-on demo in 2024, and the Seven-Star Sword Formation, Lion Dance and Drunken Sword showcases in 2025. Those were show-floor builds. None was released to the public.

Rechecked 20 September: still nothing, and the next hands-on is a show floor again. Phantom Blade Zero is playable at Tokyo Game Show on 28–29 September — the same pattern as Summer Game Fest, ChinaJoy and Gamescom earlier this year. An event build is not a download, and none of the previous ones became one.

The physical edition question

The other thing the 18 August broadcast did not deliver was a physical release — Push Square noted the disappointment in the community. As of today, the PlayStation Store lists Standard ($59.99) and Digital Deluxe ($69.99) editions only, and Steam is digital by nature. If a physical or collector’s edition is announced, it will be by S-GAME or a retail partner, and it will show up here with its contents and date.

What to do meanwhile

If you want to try before buying, the realistic path is the launch itself: the game has a Wayfarer difficulty for people who mostly want the story, and Steam’s refund window (two hours of play within fourteen days) covers a genuine test.
Pre-ordering only buys the Treasure Basin accessory and Legacy outfit early — the PlayStation Store’s own wording says both “can also be obtained through in-game progression.” There is no reason to pre-order for fear of missing a demo.
