Four players. That is the answer, it is official, and it is worth stating up front because a lot of coverage still carries the first game’s number.
Cold Iron Studios’ Co-Op Showcase announcement of 6 August 2026 is headed:
“Four-player Co-op and Crossplay READY on Day 1”
with the follow-up line: “Marines will be joining fireteams across Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox and PS5 on August 25th.”
Why you keep seeing “three”
The 2021 original, Aliens: Fireteam Elite, was a three-player game — a squad of three marines, with AI synthetics filling empty slots. That number is baked into years of articles, wiki pages and video titles, and a fair amount of Fireteam Elite 2 coverage has inherited it without checking.
So if you find a source saying three, it is not necessarily wrong about the first game — it is just describing the wrong one. Four is the sequel’s number, from the developer, dated 6 August 2026.
What “four-player co-op” does and does not tell you
The announcement confirms the team size. It does not confirm several things people reasonably assume follow from it, and we are not going to fill those gaps with guesses:
- Whether AI teammates fill empty slots. The first game used synthetic squadmates so you could play a full mission short-handed. Nothing published for the sequel says whether that returns, or whether four-player means four-player-or-bust.
- Whether the game scales difficulty to party size. Not addressed.
- Whether you can play solo. The Steam listing does carry a Single-player category alongside Multi-player, Co-op and Online Co-op — which is a meaningful signal that solo is supported in some form, but a store category is not a description of how it plays.
That Single-player tag is the most useful thing on the listing for anyone worried about needing a full group. It is present. What it delivers has not been detailed.
Matchmaking and who you can play with
Because crossplay is confirmed for day one across Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox and PS5, the practical player pool for filling a fireteam is all four platforms at once rather than each store separately. For a co-op game’s launch week that matters more than the raw player count — a four-player squad on a fragmented pool is harder to fill than on a unified one.

If you were hoping to play on one couch
