Crimson Moon shipped on PC without a keybinding menu. You cannot move sprint off B on a controller, you cannot rebind anything on keyboard, and for a lot of players that was the whole first-day experience. In our sample of the 100 most recent negative Steam reviews, about 30% cite keybinding or controls — second only to the camera.

What the developer has said, exactly

On 1 September 2026, Team Metal posted An Update on PC Keybinding on Steam. The commitments in it:

The post also included a screenshot of the in-progress keybinding screen. At our 2 September 2026 morning check, the plan was an initial remap menu followed by a cleanup patch, with no exact release date announced. The Alpha subsequently shipped on 4 September in Patch 1.0.0.1.

Shipped, 4 September: Patch 1.0.0.1

A day ahead of its own Friday target, Team Metal pushed Patch 1.0.0.1 (version 162350) with what it explicitly calls an Alpha implementation of keybinding: “basic keyboard & mouse remapping and mouse sensitivity controls while we continue to refine and expand the feature.” The path is Settings Menu > Keyboard > select the custom keyboard profile (click the left arrow). You can rebind every available action, revert to defaults and set mouse sensitivity.

What is not in, in the studio’s own list: multiple bindings (more than one key per action), double-tap inputs, and hold inputs. If your layout depends on one of those, the Steam Input route below still applies until the next pass. The same note names the team’s next targets: camera improvements, progression loss, UI scaling, crashes and additional controller layouts — tracked on the known-issues page.

How it got here (3 September)

In a pinned Steam thread on 3 September 2026, Team Metal narrowed its 1 September announcement to a day: the implementation of key remapping and mouse sensitivity controls “is now complete and has moved into testing”, and “assuming testing doesn’t uncover any issues”, they are “targeting this Friday for Patch 1.0.0.1”, which brings both options to PC. The same post explains why it shipped without: keybinding was planned for PC but pulled before launch while remaining issues were resolved. That was a conditional target; Patch 1.0.0.1 shipped on 4 September 2026.

What works right now

Controller: Steam Input. Right-click the game in your Steam library → Manage → Controller layout, and remap the buttons there. This works at the Steam layer, below the game, so the game’s own lack of a menu does not matter. The common request — sprint off B and onto the left stick click — is a one-line change. If you play through the Epic Games Store, launch the game through Steam as a non-Steam game to get the same layer.

Keyboard and mouse: nothing in-game yet. Third-party key remappers operate at the operating-system level and will technically work, but we have not tested any against Crimson Moon and do not know how the game’s build reacts to them, so we are not recommending a specific tool. If the default keys are unworkable for you, the honest options are Steam Input with a controller, or waiting for the patch that is due within days.

Should you refund and rebuy?

Several negative reviews say exactly that. Two facts to weigh: Steam’s refund window is 2 hours of playtime within 14 days of purchase, and the developer’s stated fix window is inside that 14 days. If you are under 2 hours and cannot play with the default layout, refunding is the safe move — the Alpha keybinding fix shipped on 4 September 2026 in Patch 1.0.0.1.

All quoted commitments are from Team Metal’s Steam community announcement An Update on PC Keybinding (1 September 2026). The 30% figure is our own count across the 100 most recent negative English Steam reviews on the morning of 2 September. The Steam Input route is Steam’s standard controller configuration and is not specific to this game; the keyboard remapper caveat is ours.
